Captured on a brisk, foggy morning in 2017, this photograph features the historic caboose that now rests in what is today Veterans Park. The caboose had quietly stood in this location since being gifted to the town in 1998—until a proposal emerged to sell it for $6,000 to a private resident. The suggestion sparked a passionate response from the community, as locals rallied together and signed a petition to prevent the sale, insisting the caboose was an important part of Huntersville’s landscape and heritage.

Today, thanks to that community effort, the caboose remains and has been thoughtfully incorporated as the centerpiece of the entertainment stage in the park’s revitalization. With only about 20 of these cabooses believed to remain in existence, this photograph preserves not only a rare piece of railroad history but also a story of local pride. To my knowledge, this is the only artistic rendering of this particular caboose, making it a meaningful piece for longtime Huntersville residents, newcomers to the area, and anyone who appreciates the charm and history of these treasured rail relics.
